universal design. This is by no means a comprehensive list and good
universal design will include these items and many more as appropriate
for the specific plan.
UD for Visitability
- Barrier free path to home
- Accessible areas on single level ground floor
- One accessible toilet and lavatory w/grab bars
- One no-step entry to home
- 32" clear door openings @ accessible areas
- Barrier free path to all accessible areas in the home
- Low-pile, high density carpet
UD for Aging-in-Place
All criteria as shown above for visitability, plus:
- Covered porch @ entry
- One accessible bath
- Clear turn radius
- Backing for grab bars
- Clearance @ toilet and lavatory
- Accessible shower / tub
- All fixtures, appliance controls, switches, outlets, etc. within
range of reach
- Lowered window sill heights for egress
- Easy open windows
- All doors and hallways have accessible clearances
- Closet rods, shelves, etc. within range of reach
- Energy considerate construction & materials
- Low maintenance exterior & interior finishes
- Low maintenance landscape
Design for Specific Disabilities

- Substituting sensory cues for others as needed
