Homes That Grow Gracefully with you.
- Universal Design: homes usable by the greatest
number of people possible without adaptation or special design.
- Adaptable Design: homes featuring accessible
design criteria, but which conceal or omit items until they are
needed to match individual requirements.
- Accessible Design: requirements in the Department
of Justice, 28 CFR Part 36, ADA Standards for Accessible Design,
Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Disability by Public Accommodations
and in Commercial Facilities.
Universal and Adaptable Design
Applications
Universal design expands the use of common items found in
our homes. The placement of light switches, electrical receptacles,
and shelves at heights that better accommodate children, short
people and people with disabilities that limit their range of
reach are examples of universal design. A trend in standard design
is to place the microwave above the range in the kitchen. This
placement inhibits the use of the microwave and creates a safety
hazard for many people, especially children. The application
of a universal design feature would be to relocate the microwave
to a lower position that is convenient for a broader range of
users while still saving counter space.
Adaptable Design allows individuals to install special equipment
and make modifications to the home without structural or extensive
changes to the house. Items included in this design concept might
be adjustable shelving, installing backing in walls for grab bars
and handrails, and removable base cabinets and lavatory bases for
access. An adaptable home has accessible features that allow items
to be omitted or concealed until needed so the home can look the
same as others and be better matched to individual needs.
